19th-century type design - specimen book (vol. 2)
The masterpieces of 19th-century type design.
A collection of 50 specimens typeset by hand in original 19th-century movable metal types.
Limited and numbered edition of 150 copies.
This unique type specimen book allows you to see types in their original design, without the intervention of digital manipulation. In fact, this is the only collectable series typeset by hand in original foundry types, cast between the 1800’s and 1890’s by the most notable European and North-American foundries.

Layouts and colors were individually designed so as to convey the epoch and the mood of each type.
These types made the history of 19th-century written communication (from posters and bills, to advertisement and newspapers). Many of them were also widely used during the 20th century.

Specimens (12x15 cm) are printed letterpress on heavy weight fine papers, made by the most renowned Italian, French, and German papermills, such as Fabriano, B.F.K. Rives, Magnani, Canson & Montgolfier, Hahnemühle, and Favini.
The slipcase and box (26x17x3cm) are handmade in-house.

The index was typeset by hand in a didone type cast by Nebiolo in the late 19th century.

Tallone Press has devoted many editions to type design. While the Manuali Tipografici set focuses on the timeless, 'Apollonian' classics of type design, on the other hand, the Archive of Styles set and several monographs dedicated to Italian modern type designers (Raffaello Bertieri, Giulio Da Milano, Alessandro Butti, and Aldo Novarese) focus on modern, (one could say, more ‘Dionysian’) 19th- and 20th-century types.
The collection of types in use at the Tallone Press can be explored here: www.archiveofstyles.com.

The original movable types used for the hand-typesetting of these specimens make them an exceptional endeavor in the contemporary printing scene.
Neither monotype nor linotype are used. These typesetting systems from a keyboard are often passed off as manual typography. The Tallone Press also does not print from plastic plates derived from digital compositions.
